Event details

New Zealand's Greatest Showman Henry Hayward brought circus to the streets of Birkenhead.

Hayward was born into the footlights in Wolverhampton, England in 1866. He left school early but had developed the entrepreneurial qualities of enterprise and self-reliance which later stood him in good stead in the hurly burly of the theatre and concert stage.

He arrived in New Zealand aged 39, head of the theatrical group known as Wests Pictures and the Brescians, which was a family company comprised of three Hayward brothers and their wives. Birkenhead residents became used to the parade of colourful and eclectic characters he promoted from vaudeville and silent pictures.

Join us for a progressive circus event inspired by the life and work of Henry Hayward at various locations across Birkenhead.
