Event details

Since the 1920s, the Waitākere Ranges has been a popular destination for members of the Auckland Tramping Club, an area quite remote from the city. As membership grew, many day and overnight trips were undertaken.

The club obtained land near Anawhata Road and built the hut Ngaro Te Hotare for its members. This quickly became a centre of club life with many trips and social occasions taking advantage of this special location as the bush grew up around it.

Raewynn Robertson, Senior Librarian, Local History at Research West, Auckland Libraries, will present heritage photographs from the 1920s, 30s and 40s that show moments in time and tell the stories of some of the Auckland Tramping Club's trips throughout the Ranges.
