Event details

Lava caves are underground, hidden from public view. Peter Crossley's presentation will cover the unknown numbers, locations and uses of lava caves in Auckland.

Peter has been caving since 1965 in New Zealand and has made a special study of Auckland lava caves. He has visited every cave that has been open in recent years and has good knowledge of the state of their preservation.

So far, he has been in around 250 lava caves, but many are not accessible. Most are on private land or are not readily visited. Some have been covered over by buildings and roads. Some have even been filled in because their relationship to Māori, their Pākehā sporting uses, or their scientific value were not understood.

Presented by: Mt Albert Historical Society
