Event details

Explore this cathedral, which serves as the Mother Church of the Catholic Diocese of Auckland.

Its history goes back to 1840 when Āpihai Te Kawau of Ngāti Whātua gifted 3000 acres of land to Governor Hobson. In May 1841 Bishop Pompallier, the first Bishop of Auckland, applied to Hobson for "a sufficient space of land for a church, dwelling house, and for a college, recreation ground for youth and burial ground, for the use of the Roman Catholic public".

The bishop got approval (except for burials) and two acres of ground were allocated for Catholic use at the Symonds Street cemetery. The Cathedral was dedicated on 23 February 1908.
