Event details

The magnificent Town Hall organ is New Zealand's largest concert instrument. On this tour you will hear its grand sound and learn about its history.

The organ is the treasured legacy of Sir Henry Brett, one of Auckland's pioneering benefactors.

In 1852, at age 19, he came to Auckland from Sussex in England to seek his fortune. Beginning as a shipping reporter, he went on to own the Auckland Star publishing company, became a member of the Harbour Board and City Council, and by 33 was the city's mayor.

For 50 years he sang in local choirs, and he donated the organ to "improve the standard of music in our city".
