John Steele previews his new book on the extraordinary life and times of Arthur Purchas.
Rev Purchas, who was the first minister of St Peter's, was also a prominent surgeon, scientist and architect.
Heavily involved with the Kingitanga (Māori King Movement) in the lead-up to the Waikato War, he was also an engineer, carpenter, musician, botanist, inventor, discoverer and explorer. He was later described as "the most gifted man ever to come to New Zealand".
Before the talk, the church archivist will be on hand to answer questions about particular graves in one of Auckland's earliest cemeteries.
The Fencibles, genealogists, and Onehunga Fencible & Historical will have displays within the church.
