The skills of boatbuilding are on show as a wooden craft takes shape in the workshop of the NZ Traditional Boatbuilding School. Bring the kids and help make a model boat.
Wooden craft have long been a part of Auckland's history. The boat became the way for the region's people to link together across the stretches of water, enabling the migration and settlement of once remote places. The boat was and is implicit in the development of trade, fishing and transportation.
Experience the sights and sounds of boatbuilding in action – the woodworking skills and knowledge that are intrinsic to the industry of yesterday. They are still a crucial part of today's preservation and restoration of our classic vessels.
