Works from the Mackelvie collection that deal with the themes of birth, marriage and death.
Glaswegian James Tannock Mackelvie, who lived and worked in Auckland from 1865 to 1871, was perhaps Auckland's single biggest arts benefactor. A prodigious collector, he intended his acquisitions to one day form a teaching collection in New Zealand.
His paintings and sculptures are held in the Auckland Art Gallery. Auckland Museum holds all the applied arts, and his books are held in the Auckland Library.
Elements of the Mackelvie collection of paintings bequeathed to Auckland during the late 19th century are always on display.
